Nashville Pre-Storm 06.01.06
It’s really rolling in. Sounds like waves crashing. The trees bowing and bending and coming together. My hand-crafted Hilton Head wind chimes dancing and flailing. The sky alive with light and darkness. A crack of lightning. A peel of thunder. The rain now like applause.
My cigar held. My drink Poised.
I wouldn’t miss this for all the world.

This really has nothing to do with the current post, but I thought that I should let you know that upon further research into the matter I too prefer Sam Cooke to Otis Redding. I still have nothing but love for Otis, but I've been digging Sam quite a bit lately and recalled an earlier post where I disagreed with you on the matter. Also, I think I've changed positions on the Merlot vs. Pinot Noir matter as well.
Anyway, just thought I'd mention it.
By the way, did you survive the storm?
Rex, Always pleased to see you here. You've always struck me as a wise man--I knew you'd come around on the Sam and Pinot fronts. Any give on vodka versus gin martinis? (Perhaps I shouldn't push it, eh?). Yeah, Sam on "Bring it on Home to Me" still takes me to another realm. Ironically, I found a very inexpensive and outstanding bottle of 2003 Fetzer Merlot that I fell in lust with. I'll always prefer the Pinots, but it is a treat to find a bargain that satisfies so.
The Storm Night ended with more of a whimper than bang; but, Jesus, the tease was sublime.
Glad to hear from you. Em and I are heading to Knucklehead's Mothership around 1p (06.10) for a looksee if you are in the neighborhood.
Best,
Ryan
I hope to make it over there this week, but a last-minute weekend killing project was delivered unto me on Friday afternoon while preparing to sneak out of work early.
I have to say that there will be no budging whatsoever on the gin point. My father is a vodka martini drinker, and I often have to settle for those when he is out of gin.
May you and the young 'un enjoy your bbq.
